Analysis

James came out of an unfamiliar Symmetrical English with a healthy space advantage rather than an opening problem. His central pawns restricted Russia-Melanesia's pieces, and the game reached the middlegame with White close to two pawns better by the engine's measure. The position remained strategically favourable even after 14.Nb5 surrendered some of that margin.

The real turning point came with 18.Rg1. It followed a coherent kingside plan, but it left the knight on b5 available to Qxb5 and reduced White's edge from +2.6 to +0.7. Russia-Melanesia returned the opportunity immediately with 18...Kh8, after which James again had a winning advantage. Black's queen then raided f2 and b2 but ran short of squares. James missed the clean forcing trade with Bc3 on move 22, yet 22...Nc5 allowed 23.Ra2 to close the trap anyway. Russia-Melanesia resigned with the queen stranded and White's material and positional advantage decisive. The result completed a sharp reversal after both sides had missed cleaner play.
