Analysis

James met begemon's 1...e5 with the Four Knights English and built a space advantage with 10.d5. begemon's knight went to the rim on 11...Na6 and stayed there for twenty moves, and the light-squared bishops came off on e2, leaving a queen-and-knight middlegame in which White had the better pawn on d5 and Black had a piece that could not reach the board.

The game turned twice, both times on a decision about trading. On move 19 James offered the last pair of rooks and the position flattened from +1.7 to +0.4. On move 31 the favour was returned: begemon's 30...Qe5 walked into a queen trade that would have left White with a passed d-pawn, an active knight, and a Black knight still parked on a6. 31.Qd3 declined it, and +3.0 became level in one move.

Neither player's calculation decided the game in the end. begemon walked forward with the king on 33...Kg7 and 34...Kf6, the position became overwhelming for White without further help, and by move 35 the engine had mate in nine. begemon's clock ran out first. White won on time in a position that was also winning on the board.
