Analysis

White went pawn-hunting in reverse — the offbeat 4.Be3 gambit line just leaves White down a pawn after 3...dxe4, and when 9.d5 exd5 handed over a second one, Black was simply two pawns up with the better position. By 14...Ne5 the engine had Black around 80% winning chances: pieces centralized, no weaknesses, White's queenside creaking on its own.

Then came the move this game is on the site for.

15...Qxb2?? looks like it wins a third pawn. It loses the queen on the spot to 16.Nxb2 — and the culprit was planted two moves earlier: 13.Nd1. That quiet knight retreat had exactly one useful job, covering b2. The queen had been eyeing b2 since 13...Qb6, the defender arrived in plain sight… and two moves later it had faded out of the mental picture.

The lesson (a recurring one): before grabbing anything, name every enemy piece that touches the square — especially pieces that moved recently. A piece that just relocated is the easiest one to keep evaluating from its old square. And b2/g2 are the classic trap squares for a hungry queen: the pawn is real, but the queen is a long way from home.

A clean habit that catches this: on any capture, run one deliberate scan — checks, captures and threats the opponent gets after my move — before touching the piece. That scan finds 16.Nxb2 in two seconds. Up two pawns at 80%, Black needed exactly zero more pawns.

Moment notes

White retreats the knight to d1. It looks passive, but from d1 it watches b2 — remember it, because it's about to matter.

After 14...Ne5 Black has everything: material, the center, the safer king. The winning plan is boring consolidation — trade pieces, push nothing.

The queen takes the b2 pawn… which the d1 knight has guarded for two full moves. 16.Nxb2 wins the queen and the game ends immediately.
