Analysis

A free pawn ignored, a file seized, a queen deflected

James (t3gantry, 1626) took White against Sycu_HCU (1646) in 10+5 rapid and won with the kind of game his recent work has been building toward: one clean tactic to win material, patient simplification, then a finishing combination — with only the opening asking questions of him.

The story

Out of a King's English Four Knights, 3...c6 was already a slip: it spends the knight's best square to prepare ...d5, and leaves e5 hanging. The engine wanted 4.Nxe5 on the spot (+1.3), and the pawn stayed free through move six — 6.Nxe5 Bd6 7.Qa4+! still wins it — but 4.e3, 5.cxd5 and 6.d4 were all "just developing," and 6...e4 clamped the position into a comfortable French-reversed structure for Black.

The turn

James found the right plan anyway: 10.f3 challenged the clamp at exactly the right moment (the position was level). Black auto-recaptured with 11...dxe4?? — opening the f-file straight onto the loose bishop — and 12.Rxf5 won a clean piece; only 11...Bxe4 held the balance. The conversion was textbook: 14.Ndxe4, 16.Nxd6 traded down, then 17.Qf1, 18.Bc4, 19.Bd3 and 20.Rf5 harassed the queen into 20...g5.

The finish

21.e4 quietly defended the rook, and after 21...Nxd4 came the shot: 22.Rxg5+! — removing the pawn that blocked the rook's attack on h5, with check. Every reply loses the queen (22...Qxg5 23.Bxg5; or 22...Kh8 23.Rxh5). By the final position White had forced mate in six on the board — Black's 27...Rxb2 grabbed a pawn that gets recaptured as the first move of the mate — and Sycu_HCU resigned.

An engine-approved combination, disciplined conversion, and one recurring lesson: when the opponent's last move stops defending something, take it.
