Analysis

James, with White in a Great Snake English, won an early pawn when David's queen came out to b6 on move seven and 8.Nxd5 collected the loose d-pawn. The advantage nearly evaporated — a passive tenth move from James handed most of it back — but David returned it at once, and decisively, by castling queenside on move ten, straight into the sector where White's pieces were already gathering.

That was the turning point. With the black king committed to the queenside, James sacrificed a bishop on b7 to tear open the front of it, and 15.Qb3+ dragged the king to a8 with the queen and rooks pouring in behind the check. From there the result was never in doubt, though the finish was untidy: James twice reached for a pawn — 17.Rfe1 and 19.Qxe7 — where a more forcing move would have ended things sooner, and David spent over two minutes on a rook move that only hastened the end.

The attack arrived regardless. James traded off the last defending rook with 22.Rxb8+, checked with the bishop, and mated on the back rank with 24.Qc8#. A game decided the moment the black king walked toward the guns.
