Analysis

English rollercoaster: twin move-17 blunders, decided in the endgame

James met David's ...e5 with a quiet Four Knights English and got a normal, balanced middlegame. The pivot came at move 17 in a dead-level position — and both brothers blinked in turn. First 17.Bd3 left White's queen loose and the king stranded in the centre; the simple 17.Qxe7, trading into a level endgame, was the move, and instead White was suddenly close to lost. The reprieve came at once: 17...Bf5 hit the queen but allowed 18.Qxe7, and the queens David needed for the attack came off the board. The crushing try had been 17...Qd8, keeping the pieces on against the exposed White king.

From there it was a level rook endgame, and this half James played well. He seized the seventh rank with 23.Rg7, and when David defended passively with 28...Rh8 instead of activating the rook, the f-pawns fell: 29.Rxf5 and 30.Rgxf7 left White two pawns up with active rooks. A messy, human game whose result was ultimately written by the cleaner endgame technique.
