Analysis

James, playing White, met Gugabud's Queen's Gambit Declined with an early exchange on d5 and a kingside fianchetto. Gugabud castled long on move 11 and threw the h- and g-pawns forward, and the game settled into a race: White's pressure toward the queenside against Black's pawns coming at the white king.

The balance then changed hands four times in three moves. White's queen went hunting from move 15 and an advantage of +1.8 drained to dead level by move 17. Gugabud gave it straight back with 17...hxg3, which opened the f-file for White and put the game at +3.1, and that exchange is where it was decided.

From there it ran one way. White's rooks took the c-file, the light-squared bishops came off with 22.Bxb7 Kxb7 so that Black's king was the piece holding the queenside together, and 30.Rxc7+ removed the last pawn in front of it. James let a forced mate slip at move 31 and converted the resulting rook endgame without another error, rolling the central pawns forward while Gugabud's king was driven out toward the middle of the board. It finished 41.Re6#.
