Analysis

A Caro-Kann Exchange that neither player ever managed to hold still. gayashan_desilva came out of the opening with a small pull and gave it back with the bishop sortie to b5 and the trade on c6 that followed, which left t3gantry the two bishops and a half-open b-file. By move 13 Black was close to winning.

What followed was a sawtooth. Three times t3gantry built a decisive advantage and three times let it drain back to level, usually by advancing on the kingside and leaving the e5 pawn to be collected with a check. Each time gayashan_desilva returned the favour within a move or two, and each time t3gantry took the material back the moment it was concretely on offer.

The balance tipped for good at 25.f3, played with the position running about two pawns in White's favour. It left the c2 pawn hanging, and c2 was the only defender of the knight on b3, so both fell in successive moves. From there t3gantry was a piece up with the safer king. The black rooks took the c-file and then the second rank, and 30.Qf6 walked into a queen check that won a rook and left mate unavoidable. gayashan_desilva resigned on move 33 with mate a move away.
