Analysis

effort0506 met James's Caro-Kann with the Advance and the sharp 4.h4, the Tal Variation, where Black's bishop on f5 needs a retreat arranged before anything else happens. James answered 4...e6 in six seconds, and 5.g4 Be4 6.f3 left the bishop with nowhere to go. He gave it up for the h-pawn with 7...Bxh4+, which chased the white king to e2, but the evaluation had already reached +3.0 and effort0506 was a piece ahead for very little.

For the next dozen moves effort0506 held the extra piece and pressed. 15.Bxc6+ bxc6 doubled Black's queenside pawns, 20.Bxh6 gxh6 doubled the h-pawns, and by move 20 the position stood at +5.6 with Black's king still in the centre and nothing to show for the material.

The turning point was 21.Kd1. The king stepped away from the defence of the knight on f3, and James took it immediately with 21...Qxf3+, the only move in the position that changed anything. 22.Qe2 then allowed a second check, 22...Qxh1+, collecting the rook, and effort0506 resigned. The game was decided twice by a single move: once on move four, and once on move twenty-one.
